Understand the material thoroughly. Have a broad general knowledge of the topic including statistics, facts and anecdotes. Take the time to really know the material in your speech. Keep to facts and other information that is directly related to your speech. Insert them and gauge how your audience reacts to them. Make sure you look at your audience when giving a speech. While it can be easy to get distracted by other things around you, don’t! If you want to engage your audience, you need to give them all of your attention.
Make eye contact with your audience as much as you can. Do not let yourself become distracted by something else happening in the room. You are attempting to convey a point or be persuasive, so you must be completely present.
As you prepare your speech, ascertain you know your topic well. Try broad research to see your topic from every side. Hone in your points carefully and get your remarks ready in notes that are clear and easy to follow. It will be worth it when you find the audience asking questions.
After committing your speech to memory, practice it over and over. Try to get in at least one practice session a day for the entire week before giving your speech. Try to maintain calm breathing during the speech. You will need to leave pauses for interruptions by the audience. Use the equipment you are going to use for the speech to practice if you can.
Learn your audience. Look up the list of attendees at the event. Then, greet them as they enter the room. Having some familiarity with some of your audience members can make it seem more friendly.

Practice deep breathing exercises if you are the type who is anxious when you speak in public. Deep breaths that are taken slowly in and out can calm you. Breathe in for a count of four, and then breathe out for a count of five. Repeat this six times and you will soon feel so much calmer.
